The measurement
Why do I need headphones?
Every level Somne finds is relative to the headphones you are wearing. Through a speaker, room acoustics and background noise make the comparison unreliable and the numbers meaningless. Headphones also keep the sound where it belongs — if you unplug them mid-measurement or mid-session, Somne stops rather than switching to the speaker.
What if I cannot tell whether the tone is higher or lower?
Pick the one that feels closer and keep going. The search narrows from both sides, so a single uncertain answer is corrected by the next few. You can measure again any time from the Profile tab.
Why does it ask me to choose between two tones an octave apart?
Because a tone one octave away from your tinnitus can sound like the same note. Octave confusion is the best-known trap in pitch matching, and the standard way out is to play both candidates and let you pick. Skipping it is how a measurement ends up a factor of two wrong.
My ring never came back during the silence step. What now?
That step has an end either way: mark it when your ring returns, or use “Skip this step” if nothing changes — Somne records that no inhibition was observed, which is itself a result. The step also closes on its own after five minutes.
Can I leave the measurement and come back?
Yes. “Close” saves what you have measured so far as a partial record; the steps you did not reach stay empty rather than being filled in with a guess. Start again whenever you like.
What do the numbers mean?
Pitch is the frequency of your ring. Threshold is the quietest level you can hear at that frequency. Loudness is how far your ring sits above that threshold, in decibels. Masking level is the lowest sound level that covers it completely. Residual inhibition is how long the quiet lasts afterwards. All of them are relative to your device and your headphones — they are not calibrated audiometry and not a medical assessment.
How loud should the masking be?
Somne sets it for you: just below the masking level you measured, where the noise blends with your ring instead of burying it. Louder is not better — covering the ring completely removes the contrast your brain needs in order to stop treating the sound as important. The volume control is a ±6 dB offset around your own measured level, and the app caps its own output whatever you choose.
How often should I measure again?
Once a week. Two measurements are enough to start the trend lines; the Profile tab tells you when a check is due.
Why does the sound fade instead of stopping?
An abrupt cut can wake you. The sleep timer eases the mix down to silence over the final five minutes; on short timers the fade is compressed to fit rather than starting quiet.
Can I play it all night?
Yes — choose “All night” in the sleep timer. Nothing fades and nothing stops.
Does the program have to be done in order?
Yes, one day at a time. Habituation is built on repetition, and skipping ahead removes the repetition. Missing a night does not break your streak; missing several resets the streak but never your progress.
Can I take my measurements to a doctor?
That is what the one-page record is for. Preview it free from the Profile tab; exporting it as a PDF is part of Somne. It lists what was measured, when and how, with no interpretation — the reading belongs to your clinician.
Purchases
How do I cancel?
Open the Settings app on your iPhone, tap your name, then Subscriptions, then Somne. Cancel at least 24 hours before the period ends. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.
I bought it and it is asking me to buy again
Tap Restore on the purchase screen while signed in to the Apple Account you bought with. If it still does not unlock, write to us with the date of purchase.
Refunds
Refunds are handled by Apple, not by us. Use reportaproblem.apple.com.
Your data
Where is my data kept?
On your iPhone only. No account, no server, no analytics. See the Privacy Policy.
How do I delete everything?
Delete the app. That removes your profile, your progress and your ratings. There is no server-side copy.
When to see a doctor. Somne is not a medical treatment. Seek medical advice if your ringing started suddenly, is in one ear only, pulses with your heartbeat, or comes with hearing loss, ear pain or dizziness.
